The Northern Islands (Vanua Levu and Taveuni)

Fiji's northern island of Vanua Levu, Taveuni and their neighbouring islands are well known for their dramatic mountain scenery, their authentic Fijian culture and their magnificent diving sites. The Northern Islands are an hour domestic flight to the north-east of Nadi. The most popular tourist destinations are Savusavu Bay and Taveuni island. Tourists come to scuba dive the world famous Rainbow Reef and holiday in the exquisite boutique resorts. Most of the resorts are small and intimate and offer the type of vacation difficult to find anywhere else in the world.
Savusavu Bay boosts a protected deep water harbour and is a popular stop for visiting yatchies. The famous Rainbow Reef lies between the south coast of Savusavu and the southern point of Taveuni offering spectacular diving opportunities. Jean-Michel Cousteau recognised the diving opportunities here in 1990 when he chose Savasuva as his base for his Project Ocean Search. Savusavu Township itself is small and picturesque. Its population of 5,000 is split evenly between Indo-Fijians and indigenous Fijians. Savusavu is also home to a number of ex-pat Americans who have bought property here.
Fiji's Garden Island
Taveuni has some of Fiji's best beaches and a great holiday atmosphere. Most visitors come to Taveuni for the scuba diving. Somosomo Strait and Rainbow reef offers some of Fiji's best diving where diver will encounter turtles, fish, drop-offs and white corals. Taveuni is known as "the Garden Island" because of its abundance of flora and tropical rainforest. A walk to the waterfall in Bouma National Heritage Park is a must, as is the Lavena Coastal Walk. In 1991 Producers of the film "The Return to the Blue Lagoon" were so impressed with Taveuni's scenic beauty they based their film here. The island caters for visitors with a number of independent restaurants, cafes, shops and tour operators. Don't underestimate the amount of time you'd like to stay here. Three days should be a minimum. There are daily flights to Teveuni from Nadi, Suva and Savusavu.
